James Raymond Gillis, 84, of Howard, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at Cardinal Ridge Residential Care in Howard. The son of William and Ursula (Tennant-DeGreef) Gillis was born on July 20, 1939, in the Village of Howard.
James farmed most of his working life at the family farm in the Town of Pittsfield. After farming, he worked for a short time at WG&R Furniture assembling furniture. Jim enjoyed dancing and belonged to the Happy Hoppers. He also enjoyed bowling, cooking, and reading.
A longtime member of Assumption B.V.M. Parish in Pulaski, he loved serving the Lord and was a faith-filled man. He served the parish in many capacities including Eucharistic minister, usher, helping to organize Polka Masses, and working the produce wagon. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Bona Council #4439 in Pulaski.
James is survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
In addition to his parents, William and Ursula, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Raymond (Betty) Gillis, Charles (Joyce) Gillis, and Russell (Cleo) Gillis; three sisters: Marie (Bill) Billodeau, Lorraine (Dick) Lindbo, and Evelyn (Cletus) Laabs; and a special friend, Jo O'Brien.
Friends and family are invited to gather at Assumption B.V.M. Church, 119 E. Pulaski St., Pulaski, on Saturday, June 29, from 9 – 11 a.m. There will be a Knights of Columbus prayer at 10:50 a.m. followed by the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. with Fr. James Esser, O.F.M. presiding. Interment will take place in the Cemetery of the Holy Sepulchre of St. John the Baptist in Howard.
The family would like to thank the staff at Cardinal Ridge Residential Care and the Unity Hospice Team for the loving care given to James.
